Holy dark and disco delight! Ever since (finally!) catching Jessica 6 live earlier this fall, when they opened for Amanda Blank and Peaches, I've been on a ravenous rampage to gooble up as much music as I can from the spookily-mesmerizing trio.


Upon first listen of Jessica 6's lead single, Fun Girl, first hit us back in mid-summer, we knew this troupe was one to keep on our beastly radar. With the release of the Fun Girl EP in September, they cemented my constant curiousity and intrigue surrounding them.

Yesterday, Jessica 6 debuted the video for the song, and it's just as sexy, sultry and swoon-worthy as the song itself. Give it a go now!

Here in Beastonia, all things funky, fresh and fly are greeted with a generous portion of anticipation and applause. So goes this case anytime a new tune from J*Davey is bestowed upon us....especially in this very moment.


We're writ a fair bit about the pair of Ms. Jack Davey and Brook D'Leau in the past, so a drop of new information set our hearts aflutter this afternoon. This fall, the duo was set to release their first official album, yet a string of delays has left the as-yet-untitled effort at a standstill.

But fear not, fans of the funk! On Christmas Day, J*Davey will release a free mixtape, The Boudoir Synema: The Great Mistape. Presents for everyone!

Included on the disc is the below slice of soul, Outta The Window. I always was THAT kid who couldn't wait til Christmas morning to unwrap their gifts. Ho ho ho!

Ever since word broke that a new Sade album was due out in 2010, there have been many a wanting ear yearning to know what the decade long wait since Lovers Rock would hold. The soulfully funky English outfit's 6th studio album, Soldier of Love, will be out February 8, worldwide.


Three months to the date prior to the album release, the first official single, of the same name as the offering, is officially released. Solider of Love begins with a whoosh, a horn, and a heavy drum beat...all within the first 10 seconds of play.

From the official release:
"Sade co-produced the single Soldier of Love with Mike Pela and it was written by Sade along with longtime collaborators Andrew Hale, Stuart Matthewman and Paul Spencer Denman. The track, featuring a pulsating and anthemic drum beat along with the haunting vocals that Sade is known for, is set to hit airwaves on December 8th."

Hauntingly anthemic and pulsating indeed! My favorite part rings in when Sade begins a pleading chant at the 1:39 mark...

This Saturday, November 21, a massive pop-up free swap in Bushwick is going down. Score! is a pop-up swap — a roving event series that invites New Yorkers to clear out their closets and score new treasures, through every aspect of music, apparel, art, media and random miscellany.


The last Score! Pop Up Swap drew over 1,300 people, and this weekend's event is sizing up to be just as bananas. Flavorpill and Bust Magazine are hosting the swap, the senior editor of Nylon Magazine is curating the clothing department, Showpaper is in charge of the music. More radness include: open bar, live-screenprinting, custom tote bags, and best of all, the event is a fundraiser for City Harvest. Proceeds from the door will go to their anti-hunger initiatives.

One of the albums we've been most psyched to come out early next year is Jack Splash's Technology and Love Might Save Us All... With a bunch of funk, tons of grooving soul and unique vocal stylings, the effort promises to be an eclectic mix of energetic songs.


While the album was initially to be released late this year, it's been pushed back to March 2010. BUT...there is good news.

Jack Splash will release his first mixtape on November 11. Heir to the Throne: Volume 1 is the first in a three-part series, that will all precede his album. Both the mixtape and official release features a number of notable names, including: Kelis, T-Pain and R Kelly, amongst others.

If there's one immediate way to grab my attention, it's by using both the genre descriptors of "funk" and "disco" and in your email. Seriously, you could be a Gospel singer, or hell, a hardcore rockrapper, but I guarantee you, I'll at least spin a listen if the aforemetioned verbiage is attributed.


Thankfully, I'm already aware of the radness that is both FutureFlashs and The Disco Villains, so both my listening and posting of this was kind of a no-brainer.

After putting together some monstrous releases with Steed Lord and Dirty Disco Youth this year, FutureFlashs are finally prepped for their next project. Their Get Down EP is a piece of modern synthetic electronics, influenced by 80s and 90s sounds and samples of the TV and pop culture dynamics. The EP can be streamed here, and will be officially released this Friday, October 23.

To celebrate, they've shared The Disco Villains mix of Get Down, which takes more funked out disco twists and turns than you could possible imagine. Result? Nearly 7 minutes of nonstop excitement!

Força Do Futuro is the Brazilectro baile-funk basdassery that features Bella and Steve from Beaston favorites, The Fire and Reason. They've just released a scorching song and are prepping for their debut performance.



Força Do Futuro bring forth Bomba, a spicy and fiery dancehall burner that's guaranteed to make you move. And what's better than pumping it through your headphones? Hearing it live!

Brazil vs NYC takes place on Sunday, October 25 at Europa. The show is being dubbed as such because DJs from Sao Paolo are flying in to get down NYC style. The event also features some lads we wrote about earlier this week: Tropikill!

Wow, wow, wow and yes! This works so much better than a cup of coffee to wake me up right now. The critically praised Swedish duo, Maskinen, have returned from a year of worldly travels. Looks like they've brought back a killer little souvenir for us too.


Complete with all sorts of "Stockholm scatting", Dansa Med Vapen is an immediate people pleaser, with a jungle beat and the recognizable vocals of Bondo Do Role's ex-vocalist, Marina Gasolina. Don't let that warrior-esque image up there scare you off. Yes, it's a tribal treat, in the best way possible.

Do I have a "thing" for aging, pudgy, balding and sweaty musicians? Color me guilty, but Har Mar Superstar continues to bring a "Tom Jones" swagger to the masses. And yeah, I'll be the first to admit that I fall victim to his predatorial funkiness.


With the release of his album, Dark Touches, on the horizon (October 13), Har Mar picks up where he left off 5 years ago with his offering, The Handler. First single is Tall Boy, a ridiculously catchy pop track originally meant to land in the autotuned lap of Britney Spears. Instead, Har owns the jam and now, we've got the accompanying video for said song.

Looks like the superstar pulled out all the stops when enlisting pals Eva Mendes, Alia Shawkat (from Arrested Development), and Eric Warheim (from Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!) to play in the wind factory with him!

Duderino brings the sexy to Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 26 before popping over to Mercury Lounge on the 27th. More tour dates here.

Tuesday morning funkalicious jammer for you, courtesy of a "Londonders via Frenchtastic" mix. Oh, AND this jam got lots of love from none other than resident badass, Annie Mac, on her highly praised Friday night show on BBC 1 last week.


Previousy, The Funktuary were best known for the major mix of Armand Van Helden's My My My. And Auto, well, their claim to fame came from their fix of Justice's Stress.

Now, they can both lay their previous works aside, because their work done on The Functuary's track, Wip Eletric, may very well make you forget the priors exited. It's a bit The Presets meets Poni Hoax and Basement Jaxx's illegitmate child, with an added dash of "oomph!". Ultimately meaning...we dig it!

And peep this: Auto is launching a toy line which double as USB drives. Cute and convenient!

Waaaaay back in March of last year, I introduced you to J*Davey, a duo that is all things funky, fresh, current and cool..


After hearing a bevy of tracks from the pair, including those from their dual album, The Beauty in Distortion/The Land of the Lost, I fell hard and fast for their brand of urbanfunkadelics and chic and sexy audials.

The one track that I was hung up on, however, was the solitary snippet on their 'Space for the longest time. The song, End of Your World (Mama's Back), is a downright bump and grinder of an arrangement, with vocals and lyrics to wit.

And now, there's a video for the song, and it sounds even better than it did in all of it's previous "2 minutes cut too short" glory.

Our favorite funky mixmaster out of LA is none other than DJ Hoff. Half man-half magic, the dude continues to wow us with his knowledge of oft-forgotten old school tracks mixed with today's hits and beats.


You already know from our ridiculous amount of posts on Amanda Blank, her smash Might Like You Better, and the subsequent remixes, that we are certifiably obsessed with the Philly groover. And now, Hoff takes a ride on the train, and cranks out a great blend of the track, pairing it with a Jean Carn beat.

And for fans of Common AND Miami Horror, don't fret, cause Hoff's got your back with a sweet blend of Universal Mind Control.

It's safe to say I fell in love last night. The Asteroids Galaxy Tour played their second NYC gig at the Studio in Webster Hall last night. The weather was horribly bitter, but little did I know I'd leave with a huge smile on my face and a new act to obsess over.


Formed less than a year ago, The Asteroids Galaxy Tour is heading for fame at a speed even they didn’t expect. The band, led by Lars Iversen and Mette Lindberg, has barely begun to share their music with anyone outside of their hometown of Copenhagen, and yet their first UK single, The Sun Ain't Shining No More, is already tickling the ears of delighted radio programmers across the pond.

Although Mette and Lars are the core of The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, the band grows to a six-piece live, including trumpet and sax players, clavinet sounds, a drummer and a guitarist.

Their song Around the Bend is currently being featured in ads for the new iPod Touch.

Prior to this morning, I knew nothing of maticulous. Leave it to my brother and his buddy, 2 sports freaks, to turn me on to some smooth and groovy, funked out dj. (The term "sports freaks" does not discount your musical palettes boys, you both have superior taste in tunes. I just call the "freak" shot like I see 'em.)


That said, maticulous is spinning at Huckleberry this Friday, October 10. Not only was the spot voted Time Out New York's Best New Bar 2008, but I guarantee that the music flowing through will be a cochlear pleasure. (sounds grosser than what it actually is, right? cochlear. ha!)

One of our favorite pieces of white chocolate, Duke, has recently come out with a new single. This man seriously makes some of the funkiest baby-makin' music you could ever wish for. Honestly, try not to think about breaking it off to his first hit. (below)


The new single, Save Me, won't be available for purchase on iTunes until later in October, but have a preview below. It has much more of a Euro-dance club vibe than his previous works, but fans will still flock to this immediate bumper.

We're still big fans of his 1996 smash, So in Love With You. It might be the thickest, wettest slapper of a bass line that we've ever heard.

But you know what is helping ease the pain this morning? A track I found late last year and randomly came on my shuffleupagus playlist this morning. Those are always the best kind. Mmm.


Afrobeta's karmic musical affair began in June 2006 when Tony "Smurphio" Laurencio met his muse and musical partner, the fiercely spunky and talented, Cristina "Cuci Amador" Garcia during one of his live performances. Since then, both have been riding an electronic, bilingular stream of sweet funk with Afrobeta. A cosmic mix of electronic funk and ghetto-tech house, Afrobeta's sound has spread feverishly through the Miami music scene in just a short span of time, awarding the dynamic duo with "Best Electronic Band 2007," as per The Miami New Times' reader's poll.

Nighttime is a great track that is both subdued and powerful at the same time. It's this sort of dichotomy that is found through all of Afrobeat's songs that keeps me coming back for more. And the nastiest funky bass lines you could ever hope for.

Coming out of a particularly dj/femcee/hip-hop-centric Philadelphia, it's refreshing to have Boy Wonder recently fallen on our ears. With a rockin' new wave sound, Boy Wonder's tracks are at times, reminiscent of the sexiest of Lenny Kravitz and the funkiest of Carlos Santana.

Have a read on as to how Boy Wonder got started and why he owes Adam Levine of Maroon 5 a big thank you.


1. Who is Boy Wonder and how did you come to the point where you decided "this is what I want to do"?
Man that's an interesting question for 9AM. I'm more orless a mild mannered guymost of the time and noticed very early on that whenever I performed (singing, acting etc.) I became a different person well more accurately an amplified version of myself. Sort of like the superheros I read about growing up. So Boy Wonder is basically Andre Coles with the volume turned up to 11.

I've always wanted to be some sort of entertainer and have always loved music but as far as my rock star dreams, you can blame Maroon 5 for that. I was at a concert in Philly on their first headline tour and Adam Levine pulled me up on stage and handed me his mic and I sang with the band for a few minutes. There were about 1,000 people or so and they were all feeling me and I was feeling them. Making that kind of connection is very addicting.


2. Did you have musical roots growing up?
I grew up listening a lot of my family's records Motown, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Prince etc. My Dad's band opened for Sly Stone in the 70's so there was a lot of that around as well. But the first music that really turned me on was The Police, I found a copy of their greatest hits on a shelf at home and began to gravitate towards rock music particularly Power Trios. I've always been attracted to music that's sweaty and visceral.


3. Do you have a dayjob?
I'm an Audio Visual/Video Conferencing Technician at Drexel College of Medicine.


4. What is your songwriting process like?
It all usually boils down to me in a room with a guitar. It has to be a complete fully formed idea there first before I bring in my band. If you can't perform it with just you and an acoustic guitar it's probably not worth further exploration


5. What are your ultimate goals with your music career? Is longevity or massive appeal a bigger attractor for you?
Since longevity is a certainty (I'll be making music till I stop breathing) I wouldn't mind rockin the top of the charts. Popularity even on a massive scale doesn't increase or diminish one's talents or skills it just means people like your music, like everything it has it's drawbacks but there's a lot of good you can do as well. I would ultimately be content with being big enough to make a living making music.


6. Are you influenced by pop culture/mainstream radio? Does popular media make you decide to go one way or another with song choice, etc...?
Not in any direct way I'm sure some things I see on TV/Internet and hear on the radio find it's way into my music. But I think we all are influenced by pop culture, it's inescapable, you soak it up and then you decide to go towards it or away from it.


7. If you had the opportunity to play any venue, who's opening for you and where are you playing at?
Wembley Stadium sharing a bill with The Police.
