How confusing is that title? No, not at all?

Ok, I'll explain.

Today marks the glorious entrance of a dear college friend's birth unto the world. I haven't seen much of her since moving to NYC (*tear), but at least I have her fantab site to keep the hunger pangs at bay.

So in honor of Julie Gong's birthiversary, each song here is going to have little innuendos and tales associated with them that remind me of the mischief and magic times spent over the course of 4 years living next door to each other.

Let's roll...and bask in the terrible music pickin's we've since grown to overcome. Right?

They Might Be Giants - Istanbul (Not Constantinople)
If there was ever just 1 song I had to pick to embody the enigma that is Julie Gong, it would have to be this song. Anytime this would come on, even be it at parties (pretty much by our own hands...real crowd pleaser I tell ya...ha!), you could be sure to find Julie doing a mock violin type heel kicker. And if the partygoers should allow us to get to the 2:07 mark in the song when the huge drum beats kick in, you can forget it. Shakin' what her momma gave her, JGo brought the house down with her infectious booty bumpin' twirls.

N*Sync - Pop
Sue me. We had a penchant for twinkly little boys wearing glitter and bleached blonde perms. Well, not me so much as Julie, but still. She has the eternal love flame burning for Justin Timberlake. So much so that for talent shows during the course of our tenure, she put together a rag tag group of gals and would perform N'Sync songs to an effing TEE. Of course, she portrayed Mr. JT himself and absolutely nailed every movement to perfection. (and sorry, but I had to only post the short version of this song...the one without the extended Timberlake beatbox rap cause the thought of me actually posting this song was giving me brain cavities)

Journey - Any Way You Want It
Journey, you ask? If memory serves correctly, here's the rub. There was a bar that opened up towards the end of our sophomore year. This lovely little oasis, called Nopalitos, served delicious Mexican fare, and 25 cent beers. 25 cent beers! Thursday nights, for whatever reason, were always unusually crowded, and half of the bar opened up into a makeshift dancefloor. On one particular eve, as was usual for JG and I, a dance battle started. I'm pretty sure this song was playing. (if it wasn't this one, it was another jaunty Journey tune, but I like this one, so fingers crossed this is right) So girls are getting in our face, flipping their hair a la stripperellaesque moves, and then dynamite exploded. Julie jumped up on the stage (aka a rickety set of two tables where perched atop stood a frightened looking "DJ") and began killing the crowd with her moves. And just when it couldn't get any better. She busted out THE TRIPLE SPLITS. I've never dared attempt such a maneuver as I'm sure I'd rip my lady b in half, but Julie went there. The crowd went wild. Another successful dance battle victory to notch on her belt.

Joe Budden & Busta Rhymes - Fire
For whatever reason, this was always the "getting ready to party, drinking beer in the shower" song that got us amped for a night of fun, puking up whole Triscuits and alligator tears. And probably my roommate Rachel verbally accosting someone innocent at some point in the evening.

Judas Priest - Breaking the Law
This particular song has no significance for us, however it is both relevant and neccessary to preface this tale. Let me weave it for you. During our junior year, a brand spankin' new freshman dorm was being built. In mid-spring, snow still afallen on the ground, the building was about 40% erect (erect!) with no real roof, tons of rebar laying around, and open elevator shafts filled to the brim with melted snow aka shitwater. One brilliant evening around midnight or so, myself, JG, roommate Rachel and a foreign exchange student in a dazzling gray flannel 3 piece suit decided to go party in the "taped off with yellow construction warnings piece of crap half built dorm." Bad idea. Roommate fell and bruised her ass hard, a mere inches away from falling into said shaft. (shaft!) Soon enough, a large beacon shone on us from halfway across campus. "WE SEE ALL 4 OF YOU. COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP!" fuckshitgoddamnmotherfucker. Thank god we were only subject to campus security and not real [il]legitmate fuzz. And also that our friend Kat was too busy getting arrested and expelled and reinstated every other week to keep the lawmakers too busy so they had to throw out our case.

That about sums it up in a pretty big nutshell. There were so many more songs I wanted to post, but I would be lying if I didn't say that the prospect of posting David Gray's Please Forgive Me didn't melt my cold little black heart a bit. So...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JULIE. I LOVE YA!
