Music history lesson: go!
Grime is a sub-genre of urban music which first emerged in London in early 2000. It is primarily a melding of UK garage, drum and bass, and hip hop. One of the first tracks to be recognized as grime was Eskimo by MC Wiley who was the founder of the eskibeat label. The song features Dizzee Rascal, who has been taking the Brooklyn/Indie/Underground Grimey US scene by force over the past 3 years.
Some of the first grime artists to be critically hailed in the US are The Streets, Hadouken! and Lady Sovereign. (although the "biggest midget in the game" doesn't self-define herself as grime.)
Fellow grimers to be on the lookout for: Kano, Tinchy Stryder and Shystie.
(Due propers to Mad Mark Brown for getting me back into grime!)
